Use of offshore vehicles in the BVI, Cayman Islands and Bermuda have always been popular in Hong Kong and China, particularly with the asset management industry. With the introduction of the economic substance regime in these jurisdictions, it is important to have an understanding of the regulations in order to ensure your entity does not fall foul of the relevant regime. This webinar will provide an overview and an update of Economic Substance in the BVI, Cayman Islands and Bermuda.

Who should attend

The webinar is primarily targeted to fund managers, asset managers and investors who would like to have a better understanding and update on Economic Substance Law impacting their entities in these offshore jurisdictions. It is also for anyone who have or are interested in incorporating any BVI, Cayman Islands or Bermuda entities as part of their structure.

Financial Incentive Scheme of the WAM Pilot Programme

This is one of the eligible courses / seminars under the Financial Incentive Scheme (“The Scheme”) of the WAM Pilot Programme.

Eligible in-service practitioners of the financial services industry could apply for a reimbursement up to 80% of the course / seminar fees, or a maximum of HK$10,000 per person throughout the period of 1 October 2016 to 31 March 2023 upon satisfactory completion.

Each individual may apply for reimbursement for more than one course / seminar subject to a maximum of HK$10,000 but each course / seminar can only be reimbursed once.

The duly signed application form together with the FIVE supporting documents must be submitted within FOUR months from the last day of the course / seminar attended. Please refer to the WAM Pilot Programme website for more details.

Speaker/Course Instructor

Vincent CHAN
Vincent Chan is a Counsel in both the Corporate and the Private Client & Trusts departments of Appleby´s Hong Kong office. He has over 13 years of experience practising the laws of Bermuda, Cayman Islands and BVI, advising corporate (including capital markets, mergers & acquisitions/ privatisations, private equity and restructuring) and banking & asset finance transactions , as well as setting up and providing advice on trusts & foundations. He is also a member of Appleby’s Economic Substance working group in Asia. Vincent was selected as one of the region’s 10 most notable offshore lawyers in the Asian Legal Business’ Offshore Client Choice in 2020, and ranked in the 2019 Asian Legal Business “top 40 under 40” list. Fiona CHAN
Fiona Chan is a partner in the corporate department of Appleby’s Hong Kong office, advising on a full spectrum of banking and finance, non-contentious insurance, private client and trust matters relating to the laws of Bermuda, British Virgin Islands and Cayman Islands. She has almost 20 years of offshore and onshore experience in the Asian market.

Fiona was selected as one of the region's 10 most notable offshore lawyers of the Asian Legal Business' Offshore Client Choice List 4 years in a row from 2017-2020. She was also selected as one of the 2017 Influential Women in Re/Insurance by Intelligent Insurer and recognized in Legal 500 Asia-Pacific (Offshore).
