FSDC Industry Exchange Series – Unveiling Hong Kong’s Potential: Prospective Growth in the Expanding Commodity Market

Enhancing and expanding its commodity market offerings will further strengthen Hong Kong’s economic resilience and elevate its global competitiveness. Hong Kong has distinct advantages in developing its commodity market, given China’s importance in the global commodities landscape.
To propel its commodity market to new heights, the focus lies on strengthening physical trading in strategic commodities while integrating targeted futures trading. The Financial Services Development Council (FSDC) has conducted a study to support the growth of Hong Kong’s commodity market. The report recommends enhancing the market ecosystem, targeting strategic commodities, and expanding its market connectivity with relevant markets.
Embarking on this journey entails bolstering physical warehousing infrastructure, nurturing a diverse range of market participants, and prioritising commodities with high demand and liquidity, such as gold, iron ore, copper, and aluminium. The inclusion of commodities supporting decarbonisation efforts could further enrich the market landscape. Furthermore, Hong Kong should also consider strengthening connectivity with key markets to facilitate cross-border commodity trading.
As our HKSI Institute Member, you are cordially invited to attend the FSDC Industry Exchange Series webinar. The speakers will discuss the strategies that Hong Kong can take to become a commodity trading hub for the region.
