HKSI Institute Celebrates its 20th Anniversary with Induction of Dr Bill Kwok as Honorary Fellow

Hong Kong, 20 November: More than 350 members and guests attended the Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute (HKSI Institute)’s 20th Anniversary Dinner on 16 November 2017, in celebration of its two-decade milestone in the financial services industry. Dr Bill Kwok, one of the founding members of the HKSI Institute, was conferred the Honorary Fellowship, in recognition of his distinguished contributions to the Institute and the advancement of the financial services industry in Hong Kong. Four esteemed HKSI Institute members were also inducted as Senior Fellows, for their work and support towards the Institute and the development of young people for the industry.

“It has been a remarkable journey of progress and achievement for the HKSI Institute – driving standards, developing the younger generation, and engaging the professional community we serve through professional examinations, training programmes and events, as well as our membership services,” said Mr John Maguire, Chairman of the HKSI Institute. “We are grateful to our Members, partners, government officials, regulators and industry leaders, for their relentless commitment to and support of the HKSI Institute in championing professional standards of excellence. It is through and with them, that the HKSI Institute can continue to deliver compelling value propositions to our stakeholders,” Mr Maguire added.

At the celebration dinner, the HKSI Institute conferred the top accolade, its Honorary Fellowship, to Dr Bill Kwok, Managing Director of Wocom Holdings Limited, in recognition of his vast contribution to the HKSI Institute and the financial services industry in Hong Kong. Dr Kwok was Past Chairman of the HKSI Institute and served on many Committees within the Institute over the years, providing wise counsel and strategic direction.

“The HKSI Institute has come a long way since its inception in 1997. The financial services landscape has changed, and has become more demanding and regulated, but the Institute remains steadfast in its mission to set standards of professional excellence and integrity for practitioners,” Dr Bill Kwok commended. “I am proud to be a part of this professional community and look to help serve the industry and nurture our next generation as leaders for tomorrow,” Dr Kwok said. In addition to HKSI Institute-related contributions, Dr Kwok has served as a Member of: the Hong Kong Trade Development Council’s Financial Services Advisory Committee; the Government’s Advisory Committee on Human Resources Development in the Financial Services Sector; and the Securities and Futures Commission’s Takeovers and Mergers Panel and the Takeovers Appeal Committee; among other public services. He joined as the board of the Hong Kong Futures Exchange Limited in 1991 and served as a board member of the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited from 2000-2017.

Four HKSI Institute members were also inducted as Senior Fellows that evening in recognition of their contributions to the Institute, including attracting, engaging and nurturing students, young professionals and new entrants to the industry. They are:

  • Mr Benson Lo, Chairman and Executive Director, Pacific Foundation Securities Limited (also Organising Chair of the HKSI Institute 20th Anniversary Celebration Committee)
  • Mr Paul Day, Managing Director, Morgan Stanley Asia Limited
  • Ms Judy Vas, Managing Director, UBS
  • Mr Lewis Wan, Chairman, HKFAEx Group

Over the last 20 years, the HKSI Institute has undertaken many key industry initiatives, serving the professional fraternity and the community at large. One such recent initiative is the Advanced Learning Platform (ALP), which was launched with the support of the Securities and Futures Commission to enhance the accessibility and scope of the Institute’s technology based learning offerings.  The Institute’s new online platform enables it to redefine how it delivers its courses and education offerings, and enables Members and financial services practitioners to learn anytime, anywhere and at their own pace – facilitating practitioners to progress to the next level in their careers.

“As we reflect on our past achievements and celebrate today’s success, we also look forward to continuing to build a solid foundation for our industry – advocating ethical behaviour and best practices in the industry, as well as enhancing our infrastructure and systems, such as through the ALP, to better serve our stakeholders,” Mr Maguire said. “Each one of us can make a difference, and I would strongly encourage you to make a conscious choice to get involved in the work of the HKSI Institute, and play a part in raising standards in our securities and investment market even further,” Mr Maguire enthused.
