Gateway to Finance - An Overview for New Entrants

Prof Chak Wong
Author, former Managing Director at Barclays & UBS

Prof. Wong was Managing Director and Head of Structuring of IBD Asia including Japan of Barclays Capital. He was responsible for client risk advisory and risk management solutions across all asset classes.

Prof. Wong was Managing Director and trader in UBS London and Hong Kong, co-heading the APAC structured products groups which trades and designs products including all asset classes and hybrids.

He also spent a number of years in London in Goldman Sachs as Executive Director, working as a strategist/quant and trader for rate, FX and inflation. Prior to that, he was a quantitative analyst in credit derivative and emerging market in Morgan Stanley, London.

Prof. Chak Wong is currently Professor of Finance Practice at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, program director of MSc Finance, associate director of MBA and director of Asia Pacific Institute of Business.

Prof. Wong holds a Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Philosophy in Economics from the University of Oxford. He was Rhodes Scholar of Hong Kong 1995.

Mr Wong joined the Institute as the Chief Executive in April 2009. Prior to joining the Institute, he worked for the DBS Bank Ltd in Singapore as Managing Director for eight years where his responsibilities included Advisory Sales, Equity Derivatives Trading, Investment Products, and Private Banking. He also served as a member of the Boards of DBS Asset Management and DBS Vickers.

In 1998-2000, he was a Senior Executive Director of the Market Services Group of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong, overseeing the Information Technology & Trading, The Stock Option Exchange, and Information Services.

Mr Wong has over 30 years of experience in banking and finance and held various senior positions in Citibank, Credit Suisse, Toronto Dominion Bank and JP Morgan. Mr Wong also taught undergraduate and MBA courses in Finance at the University of Hong Kong in mid eighties.

Mr Wong has been a member of the Institute since 1998, and had served on the Examinations Committee in 1999-2000. Mr Wong holds a MBA degree (Specialisation in Finance) from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Rochester. He has been a Chartered Financial Analyst since 1989.

Mr John Maguire FHKSI
Head of Corporate Finance, REOrient Group

John has over 20 years’ experience in the securities industry. He is now the Head of Corporate Finance of the REOrient Group. Prior to that, he was the Managing Director at OSK Capital Hong Kong.

John is a solicitor admitted in Hong Kong and in England and Wales. John is Deputy Chairman of the Securities and Futures Commission’s Takeovers and Mergers Panel, a Member of the Takeovers Appeal Committee and a Member of the Committee on Real Estate Investment Trusts. John is a Fellow Member of the Hong Kong Securities Institute and a Member of the Institute's E-Committee.

John has extensive corporate finance experience in Asia serving local and multinational clients. John has assisted clients in completing a wide range of transactions including: initial public offerings, public company takeovers, public company rescues, corporate restructurings, strategic acquisitions, disposals and joint ventures, reverse takeovers, very substantial acquisitions, rights issues, venture capital fund raisings and privatizations.

John is the author of the chapter entitled “Profit Forecasts and Asset Valuations” in the book “A Practioner’s Guide to The Hong Kong Takeover Code” published by City & Financial Publishing. John is also the co-author of "Legal Aspects of Corporate Restructuring", a chapter in the Euromoney book "Corporate Restructuring".

From Back to Front – Prospect of Securities Market

Mr Louis Mak MHKSI
Founder and Chief Executive Officer of I-Access Group

Mr Mak is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of I-Access Group, the parent company of I-Access Investors, which is the first local discount broker in Hong Kong. Louis was the chief designer of the trading system providing online investment services for concurrent usage by thousands of clients. The retail network was originated from the high frequency trading system used by I-Access for quoting for options and algorithm trading in index futures. I-Access is now one of the largest derivatives brokers in Hong Kong, sharing over 2% of market turnover.

Mr Mak holds a BA in Business Studies from the University of Cambridge, a law degree from the Manchester Metropolitan University, and LLM from the University of Hong Kong. He is a committee member of the Membership Committee and e-Committee of HKSI.
