Examination Results Statistics for LE Papers 1, 2 and 6 in Aug 2006

LE Paper 1 in Aug 2006

The pass rate of LE Paper 1 held on 26 Aug 2006 was 42%. Figures 1 and 2 show the distribution by scores of the exam results and the overall topical correctness¹ achieved in the examination.

Table 1 below shows a comparison of the topical correctness rates of each topic of LE Paper 1 from January to August 2006.

Among the 9 topics of LE Paper 1, candidates' performance in 6 topics has declined when compared to the previous month. In particular, the correctness rate of Topic 6 (Business Operations and Practices) recorded a sharp fall. By contrast, however, candidates' performance in Topic 8 (Other SFC Regulated Activities) has improved significantly and this topic recorded its highest correctness rate ever.

In addition, our analysis shows that candidates' performance in one subject area of each of Topics 1, 6, 7 and 9 listed in Table 2 below was particularly weak and indicates the topics/sections in the Study Manual which candidates should read when revising for these subject areas.

LE Paper 2 in Aug 2006

The pass rate of LE Paper 2 held on 26 Aug 2006 was 26%, a sharp decline when compared to the exam results of the previous month. Figures 3 and 4 show the distribution by scores of the exam results and the overall topical correctness achieved in the examination.

When compared to the previous month, with the exception of Topic 4 (Dealing in Securities Traded on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (SEHK)) and Topic 6 (Options and OTC Derivatives) in which the correctness rates remain consistent, candidates' performance has declined substantially in 4 of the remaining 5 topics, with the correctness rate of Topic 7 (Market Misconduct and Offences) falling by 46 per cent to its lowest level recorded to date.

As shown in Table 4 below, our analysis shows that five subject areas in Topics 1, 2 and 7 were particularly weak and indicates the topics/sections in the Study Manual which candidates should read when revising for these subject areas.
