LE Paper 1 in Mar 2006
The pass rate of LE Paper 1 held
on 25 Mar 2006 was 45%. Figures 1 and 2 show the
distribution by scores of the exam results and the
overall topical correctness¹ achieved in the
examination.

Candidates' performance across most of the 9 topics
of LE Paper 1 remains consistent when compared with the
previous month, although the correctness rate of Topic 6
(Business Operations and Practices) shows a noticeable
improvement. Candidates¡¦ performance in Topic 7
(Securities, Options and Futures) remains the weakest
among the 9 topics of LE Paper 1 in the 2006
examinations.
Our analysis
shows that candidates' performance in one subject area
each of Topics 1, 3 and 7, as listed in Table 2 below,
was particularly weak and indicates the topics/sections
in the Study Manual which candidates should read when
revising for these subject areas.

When compared with the correctness rates of the
previous month, candidates' performance in Topic 5
(Other Securities Activities) shows a considerable
improvement while candidates' performance in Topic 6
(Options and OTC Derivatives) shows a marked decline. In
addition, although candidates' performance in Topic 1
(Regulatory Framework) has improved this month, it
remains the weakest topic among the 7 topics of LE Paper
2.
Our analysis shows that candidates' performance in
three subject areas of Topics 1 and 3 listed in Table 4
below was particularly weak and indicates the
topics/sections in the Study Manual which candidates
should read when revising for these subject areas.

subject area 1, "Functions and powers of the SFC and its
committees, tribunals and panels", in which candidates
also performed unsatisfactorily in the previous month's
examination.

held on 18 Mar 2006 was 30%. Figures 5 and 6 show the

remains consistent when compared with the previous
month. Nevertheless, our analysis shows that there are
three subject areas in Topics 3 and 4 in which
candidates performed unsatisfactorily. Table 6 lists

revising for them.

The score system of topical correctness provides a
performance score for each topic, ranging from 0 to 1.
When all questions relating to the same topic are
answered correctly by all candidates, the topical
correctness score will be 1. Conversely, if all
questions relating to the same topic are answered
incorrectly by all candidates, the topical correctness
score will be 0.
