Topic:

CSR: Short-term Fashion or Long-term Transformation of the Corporation?

Only a decade ago it was argued that CSR would be short-lived because social responsibility, however laudable, was not the business of companies. Corporations owe their responsibility to shareholders, not the community at large. However, CSR has grown stronger in the corporate world precisely because shareholder interests in maximizing profits can lead to negative outcomes from a communityˇ¦s perspective, such as environmental degradation and poor labour practices. Christine Loh will look at the idea of the ˇĄcorporationˇ¦, place CSR in context and discuss where it might go in the longer-term. Ms. Loh will provide examples of what companies are doing in environmental protection, diversity, brand building and how they look at competing in the market place.
