Last Year¡¦s Setbacks, This Year¡¦s Profits

Regulation and corporate governance will be top priorities for financial markets in 2008, as Asia¡¦s governments and investors seek to learn the lessons from the sub-prime crisis of the last year. Chinese officials have also made it clear that worries over financial stability have been an obstacle to ¡§through train¡¨ arrangements to give Mainland investors access to Hong Kong.

Leo Goodstadt will discuss the background to the set-backs of 2007, current concerns for regulators and how financial markets will respond in the coming year. He will argue that Hong Kong¡¦s experience of financial crises shows that better rules will give investors the reassurance they need for further market expansion.

Mr Leo Goodstadt 

Leo Goodstadt has experience of policy-making at the highest levels as former head of the Central Policy Unit. His private sector clients have included such leading financial institutions and public companies as Hang Seng Bank and PCCW. He has an impressive record of financial research, and has held fellowships at the Hong Kong Institute for Monetary Research. The lessons to be learnt from Hong Kong¡¦s own record of bank collapses and financial scandals are lucidly presented in his recently-published book, Profits, Politics and Panics: Hong Kong's Banks and the Making of a Miracle Economy, 1935-1985 (Hong Kong University Press).
